Christmas gifts for students and staff at Nakahama ES & Yamashita ES

JP & the Cezar's Kitchen crew have volunteered their time and skill to prepare Christmas cake for all the students & staff at both Nakahama/Sakamoto Elementary School & Yamashita Elementary School. The Saint Maur Relief Fund will cover the cost of the ingredients, and will also purchase a large candy cane for each child. We'd like to wrap the cake & candy cane boxes in colourful Christmas wrapping paper, and we're asking students to decorate square paper measuring 25cm x 25cm with joyous cheer! Students/HR teachers can give cards/decorative paper to Mr Morice.

Latest News

Thank you to all those who joined us on Wednesday, November 9th for our presentations on recent Tohoku trips.

After our experiences with Peace Boat, it was decided that we would donate a further 1,000,000 Yen from our fund to assist them with their relief work in Ishinomaki City over the winter. A Peace Boat representative joined us for the second time at our Xmas Bazaar, and will again visit our school Friday, November 18th.

The committee decided to assist Nakahama & Yamashita Elementary Schools in replenishing the international section of their libraries. We also thought you might like to donate a book about your country. Ideally, the books should target elementary students whose first language is Japanese. The books might be about food, sports from around the world, dance, geography, history, or even atlases. You can drop off a book in the collection boxes by the Front Office, near the Faculty Room or in the Montessori Building.

Finally, December 11th marks the 9th month since the magnitude 9 quake hit Japan. We would love to see as many members of the Saint Maur Community as possible in their Pray for Japan t-shirts during the school day.

Teachers Visit Yamamoto

A group of 7 teachers from Saint Maur have just returned from the tsunami hit region. We visited the town of Yamamoto, just south of Sendai and home to Nakahama Elementary School. We worked out of the Yamamoto Volunteer Centre, mainly assisting the remaining strawberry farmers. Some 90% of the strawberry farms in the area have as yet been unable to rebuild.

We visited Nakahama ES and Yamashita ES and presented students and staff with gifts courtesy of our Tohoku Fund. On the final day we were lucky enough to take part in Yamashita ES’s International Day. It was a truly magical experience, with all members looking forward to another trip north in the near future.

Both schools are short on library resources, so this looks like becoming part of our fund’s focus.

Peaceboat In Ishinomaki

In May the Saint Maur Earthquake & Tsunami Relief Fund made a 100,000 yen donation to Peaceboat Japan (see earlier post). Over the mid-semester holiday one of our teachers had the chance to join a Peaceboat team and see first-hand the fantastic work that they are doing in Ishinomaki. Follow the link to find out more.

Message from Nicky Farmer of The International School, Uganda

I am glad you received the donation from our school in Uganda. We began the fundraiser in June to not only raise money for the people of Japan but as an awareness program to the school and its community.

Students aged 5-12years old held a swim-a-thon whereby getting sponsors for the amount of laps they swam in class. With the incentive of 'every little helps' and the support and enthusiasm of our Japanese families, the students raised just under $3,000.

Saint Maur teachers visit Miyagi-ken

A number of our teachers had the opportunity to visit the Tohoku region over the mid-semester break. As well as taking part in volunteer activities, they were able to visit two schools in the region and now have a clearer idea of how money from the Saint Maur Relief Fund could be used. More details and photos to follow.

Donation from the International School of Uganda

Thank you to everyone at the International School of Uganda for the very generous donation of 220,227 yen. We look forward to hearing about how the school raised so much money.

Kotatsu Donation Program - Message from IACJapan

The IACJapan group is happy to announce that through the support of St. Mary's alumni George Tsai (Class of 1973) and James Reed (class of 1969) and with proceeds from the IACJapan Natsumatsuri held at Nishimachi in June, we will be donating another 350 kotatsu to Tagajoshi, Ofunato and Kesennuma. We are hoping that people will join in helping keep the elderly warm in Tohoku this winter as most of them are accustomed to using kotatsu to keep warm. We still need thousands more and would like to ask everyone to visit the donation link below to see how you can help one of these families.

The Montessori “Walk of Coins” Fundraising Efforts

The Montessori children’s fundraising event called the “Walk of Coins”, was a staggering success with the amount of ¥51,560 collected by the children. The Walk of Coins is a charity walk thus the children needed sponsors to help them earn the distance for walking. They asked parents and supporters to sponsor them by bringing in as many ¥10 and ¥100 coins as possible to fill up the map of Japan which was made on the floor.  Some children brought in money from their allowance and/or earned the money at home by doing specific chores and/or doing various acts of kindness.

The ¥100 coins outlined and filled in the areas which were affected by the earthquake and tsunami. The remaining areas of Japan were outlined and filled in with ¥10 coins.  It was both an exciting visual and hands–on learning experience, which also lends itself to a Montessori math activity by counting ten ¥10 coins in exchange for one ¥100 coin, and ten ¥100 coins in exchange for one ¥1000 note.  The focus for this project was in two parts—collecting and walkingApart from helping the people of Tohoku, another incentive was to collect enough money to walk to a local park and play there for a certain amount of time, which depended on how much we raised. We hope you would agree the children’s efforts with this fun project have allowed them a much deserved playtime!

HOT OFF THE PRESS! The Montessori T-shirts arrived on Thursday, June 2! One of our all-time favorite songs in our Montessori classrooms is “The Alphabet Song”. As fun way of capturing the children’s joy for singing it each day, a T-shirt was designed with the pictures of each letter and below it the children wrote their name according to the beginning sound in their name.  It’s a catchy song and the t-shirt itself is bound to be a winner, too!

Both fundraising events together brought the grand total to: ¥70,230!!!!

Grade 7 boys buy toys for children in Miyagi

5 boys from 7O (Sung Jae, Sotaro, Oscar, Shashwat, and Avkash) went to Motomachi on Sunday, April 24th to collect money for the Saint Maur Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund as part of their service learning project for English. They collected a total of 38, 063 yen and donated all the coins (14,063yen) to the St. Maur yenny drop.

In addition, Avkash and his friends organised the purchase of some toys which were sent to the Shichigahama Kosodate Shien Center (Children's Support Center) in Miyagi. Avkash's Mom reports that she received a call from the Center this week saying that the toys had arrived and they were extremely happy to have something for the toddlers to use. Well done lads!

We are anticipating the representative will be able to give a presentation to students and staff detailing Peace Boat’s volunteer work in Ishinomaki City

Connecting with others around the world

Many thanks to the warm and generous community that is Saint Maur. Thank you too for spreading word of our fund throughout the world. Our blog has had around 700 hits from places as far flung as Costa Rica, Cambodia and Qatar. In fact during the past fortnight we’ve attracted the attention of Columbia Grammar School in New York who are forwarding $7000 USD. Their students held a Read-A-Thon in April to raise funds for the people of Japan. Eric Ogden, a representative of Columbia Grammar School stated,

“Thank you so much for setting up this fund and keeping the blog on your website.  We have used it as a way to help our students understand the events that happened in Japan. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with another school and for your efforts on behalf of those who suffered such huge losses.”

Yenny Drop - A Huge Success

The Middle and High School Student Councils’ fundraising venture, ‘The Yenny Drop’ finished last Friday at 3:30pm. During the week, staff and students of St. Maur took guesses at how much money was in the yenny drop, which regardless of the final amount, was undoubtedly a success. For the past month, it has been a pleasure to see children, young and old, take great pleasure at watching their donations slide down the tube to the amassing pile at the bottom. The guesses ranged from 3,000yen to an optimistic 160,000, with the average guess being around 15,000 yen. However, the final amount was a staggering 95,543 yen. This was far above (nearly) everyone’s expectations. The closest guess was 82,428 by Mr. Rucci, who will receive a free ‘Pray for Japan’ t-shirt (another fundraising initiative undertaken by the HSSC which should be arriving this week).
On behalf of Miss Chotard of the HSSC, Brendan Agnew of the MSSC, and Gerard Morice & David Barrett of the ESSC, I would like to thank everyone who has enthusiastically supported the various St. Maur fundraising initiatives this semester.
Mr Dixon

Helping Fukushima Evacuees

A group of Saint Maur parents have been assisting the five Fukushima families remaining at the Isogo Community Centre. Mrs Krstulovic-Opara has been coordinating the delivery of home-cooked meals every Friday, while Mrs Ono has been translating and organizing babysitting volunteers. If you’re in a position to help this initiative please let the ladies know. The families will shortly move into more permanent accommodation, and as a gesture of good will the committee has decided to donate furniture vouchers of 70,000 yen to each family.

T-shirts selling fast

Hannah & Alisa have been busy designing our own Pray for Japan t-shirt. On Friday, May 13th we placed an order with the printers for a whopping 226 t-shirts. We ordered a few extra, so if you missed the cut-off date, the first few to see Mr. Morice might be in luck. If all goes according to plan the t-shirts should be distributed from Monday, May 30th.

Nakahama ES Update

At our most recent committee meeting we decided to allocate 1,000,000 yen to resources for Nakahama ES and the school that is hosting the staff and students, Sakamoto ES. Nakahama ES has not been permitted to return to their school building and as such is sharing the facilities at Sakamoto ES.

さあ、一歩、一緒に前へ、強く、確実に Essay written by Kurumi (Grade 6)

Hampers to be sent to Nakahama ES

The committee decided it would be a nice gesture to send a hamper of goodies to each child and staff member at Nakahama ES. On Monday the students on the committee brainstormed ideas for the hamper. We will purchase items such as snacks & stationery in bulk, and the students on the committee will set about packaging the hampers. At this stage several families are still living in the confined spaces of evacuation centres, and thus storage space is limited. We will hold off on delivery of the hampers until the families have moved to the government-provided housing. Hopefully we will be able to present the hampers in person in the very near future. We will spend 200,000 yen on this initiative. It would be terrific if we could include pictures and messages of support in each hamper, so if you’re interested in putting pen to paper drop your messages off at the 4M classroom.

Our first delivery to Nakahama ES

Friday, April 22nd Saint Maur forwarded a very large package of goodies to Nakahama Elementary School. Already this week the Relief Fund has enabled us to purchase and forward items that the Japanese Education Department cannot cover, such as a shredder, a laminator and a label printer. Friday’s goodies also included toothbrushes, cups and a carry bag for each student and member of staff. Also enclosed were lots of Easter eggs and letters/pictures of support and encouragement from our Elementary School students (a big thank you to our Japanese teachers who spent a good deal of time editing the letters!) In addition, we packed some Saint Maur sakura tumblers and a Saint Maur year book. Let's keep up our fund-raising efforts so that we can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of the children and teachers at Nakahama ES.

Girl Guides candy sale

Friday after school the Saint Maur Girl Guides tempted students and families alike with some delicious candy from the UK. There were many old favourites on offer including several homemade scrumptious delicacies.

Theatre for Tohoku

The tenth grade performance of "Amadeus" raised 19,706 yen for the earthquake relief fund, raising the total for Theatre for Tohoku to 23,748. Well done to everyone involved. There is talk of a Grade 8 performance coming up soon!
