Grade 11 coffee run

Grade eleven students completed the coffee run for the second week in a row today. They raised 8,699 yen this week bringing the total money raised to 16,336 yen. This was especially impressive this week as they had to change into their Japanese Culture Day costumes right after delivering the coffees and still make it to their first period classes on time!

Our first delivery to Nakahama ES

Friday, April 22nd Saint Maur forwarded a very large package of goodies to Nakahama Elementary School. Already this week the Relief Fund has enabled us to purchase and forward items that the Japanese Education Department cannot cover, such as a shredder, a laminator and a label printer. Friday’s goodies also included toothbrushes, cups and a carry bag for each student and member of staff. Also enclosed were lots of Easter eggs and letters/pictures of support and encouragement from our Elementary School students (a big thank you to our Japanese teachers who spent a good deal of time editing the letters!) In addition, we packed some Saint Maur sakura tumblers and a Saint Maur year book. Let's keep up our fund-raising efforts so that we can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of the children and teachers at Nakahama ES.

Montessori Walk of Coins / Charity Walk

Montessori children are participating in a project called “Walk of Coins,” a charity walk.  They place donations of ¥100 or ¥10 coins in and around a map of Japan, which is located on the floor near the Montessori faculty room.  The children can also earn coins by doing chores at home and/or by performing acts of kindness.  Their goal is to earn enough money, which when converted into distance, will get them to a local park (where they will be allowed to play) and back.  The counting of the coins is tied in with a Montessori Math activity.

MS & HS StuCo Money Drop

Students in the Middle School & High School made a "yenny" drop all the way down the main stairway.

These items will be distributed to children who are living in shelters by Dr. Akiko Ohnogi of the Japan Association Play Therapy, who is training volunteers to help these children overcome trauma through therapeutic play. Our students collected 6 boxes of toys and books. Thank you to everyone who donated these items!

Well done Australian School, Dhaka

Former Saint Maur math teacher, Ms. Lyn Bissonnette, hands over US$600 to Saint Maur School Head, Ms. Jeanette Thomas, during a short visit on April 5th from her present school, the Australian International School of Dhaka in Bangladesh.  Ms. Bissonnette said, “The student council raised the money by making a poster describing the devastation and hanging it in the reception area.  We had parent/teacher nights for four nights and the student council members stood in front of their poster and took turns asking parents for donations. The fifth night we had a fund-raising dance. It was the first time the school held a dance and it was quite successful!”

Our new sister school - Nakahama Elementary School

This morning we heard from Nakahama Elementary School. They are a small school on the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. At this early stage they have requested only a few items which we have covered. The committee plans to send a small group of teachers on a meet & greet mission. We hope to build a relationship of trust & respect with Nakahama ES. Together with the teachers from Nakahama ES we hope to promote communication between our students and support them in any way we can.

Helping evacuees in our neighbourhood

A group of Saint Maur students, parents and teachers came in to school during the spring holiday to bake a cake for some evacuees currently living at the local community centre.

Red & White Day

On Friday students dressed up in red and white to remember the victims of the disaster. The students raised over Y150,000! How about a Crazy Hair Day next Friday?

Thank you Geneva International School

Students from Geneva International School, Switzerland have generously donated CHF 1000 to the Saint Maur Relief Fund. The Primary School has held a fund-raising sale, while the Middle School will be donating the proceeds from their International Lunch to our relief fund. Last week the students held a minute’s silence to remember the victims and survivors, and the Secondary School students made a Japanese “human flag”. Hopefully we can post some photos of these events.
